Are the bone pendants in You Know How the Caged Bird Sings items that participating characters get to keep after they've completed Cree's task successfully, or are they expected to return them when they're finished with their pursuit?

Additionally, if a character loses one along the way somehow, would they be able to get another if they participate in the quest again and produce more results?
