Once he learns to control it, he will be able to read the general mood of the room if he focuses (hostile/happy/angry/etc.) and it will be easier with fewer people around. Through touch, he will be able to feel the strongest emotions of the person he touches, though he will have to learn how to control it and not be overwhelmed by the stronger emotions of others. In time, he may learn how to forge a loose connection with people he is close to so that he can feel a light echo of their emotions even when they aren't touching.
